Growth Groups

What is a Growth Group?

A Growth Group is a small community that meets weekly to discuss spiritual truths and support one another as they pursue Jesus together. Our Growth Group philosophy is not much more complicated than that. Growth Groups are gatherings of people who are learning to do life together to help fulfill the mission of the church. Most of our Growth Groups will be meeting in homes. We think it is based on the example we see in the New Testament. A home is a comfortable place for most people to build relationships with others. It reinforces the memorable metaphor of the church as a family. Ultimately, the setting doesn’t matter as much as the heart of the people. Homes, classrooms, conference rooms, and coffee shops are all acceptable places for Growth Groups to gather.

What is the importance of

Growth Groups?

When Jesus left the earth and ascended into heaven (Acts 1:1-11), the disciples were left looking up into the sky in wonder and mystery. Rather than going their separate ways, they gathered together in an upper room in Jerusalem. It was in the Upper Room that the next part of God’s plan was set into motion. God transformed a small group of individuals from sky-starting groupies to a world changing force by the power of the Holy Spirit.

It’s been said that if a person new to the church doesn’t form a relationship with someone within a few months, that person is likely to leave the church or at best always exist along the margins. That is why Jesus started a relational ministry that functioned as a small group. He modeled and taught what it means to live in relationship to God and with one another every day. Once Jesus ascended to heaven, the believers continued the practice of meeting together in groups as Acts 2:42-47 indicates:

When do Growth Groups meet?

Our groups meet from October through May, taking breaks over the holidays and during the Summer months. Groups meet on various nights of the week in homes and church. Each group last for an hour and half.

What is required for joining a group?

Joining a Growth Group requires a commitment to attend weekly meetings and completing the Group questions in the Abide booklet.

What about Child Care?

We leave it up to each couple or group to work out their own child-care. Sometimes it works well for groups to share a sitter or to swap child-care with another family whose group meets on a different night..

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awea] came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

How do I join a Growth Group?

Some time in September, LCC will host an event calledGroupLink. GroupLink is an event where people in similar stages of life and areas of town connect to form a Growth Group. This is a fun evening with light snacks designed to populate our growth groups. If you would like to join a group during the year you can click on the link below.
